Three years ago, when Ryan and Anna’s younger brother, David, was diagnosed with developmental delays at the age of two, everything changed for their family - physically, emotionally, and mentally. They saw firsthand the challenges parents and caregivers face when supporting children with learning differences.
Despite months of therapy, progress was slow until one day during Ryan’s piano practice, David began to dance. Soon he was singing along, and Anna joined in. Music became his bridge to connect, communicate, and grow. Over time, his development accelerated, and today David speaks both English and Chinese, thriving in a general education classroom alongside his peers.
Inspired by David’s remarkable growth, Ryan and Anna began volunteering in special education classrooms, leading music sessions filled with singing, rhythm, and instrument play. Consistent with the findings of numerous scientific studies, their work has reinforced children’s positive responses to music, strengthened their engagement, and fostered connection and developmental growth. Teachers and parents embraced these sessions with enthusiasm.
Today, Ryan and Anna are expanding Bright Beats beyond Virginia so more children can experience the joy, inclusion, and learning opportunities that music can bring. Bright Beats exists to inspire, unlock potential, and help every child step into a brighter future, because every child deserves their own bright beat!
